WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE FOUND A STRAY OR HOMELESS ANIMAL –
*Secure the animal in a safe place, if you cannot, call your local animal control for a pickup.
*Observe the animal for any wounds or illness.
*Check for any identifying collar or tags.
*During business hours bring the animal to the shelter to be scanned for a microchip.
*If you are holding the animal until you can bring it into a shelter please make sure it has a comfortable place to lay with shelter from the elements, is secured not to escape or harm itself and feed/water the animal. (If the animal is very thin, less is better, feed small portions slowly.)
*Post the “found” dog or cat on Petco Love Lost
*Take a picture of the animal and send a private message to Barren County Kentucky Lost and Found Pets FB with where it was found, a description, if wounded and any identifying factors
*If you are hosting the animal and have your own pets, keep the animal away from your pets and small children remembering you do not know this animal’s history of behavior or disease.
*If contacted by the possible owner never return a dog without some form of identification to include health record or personal photo of the animal.
*If you cannot keep the animal until claimed, during business hours bring the animal to the shelter in the county it was found.
*Never pick up an animal you think to be aggressive, call Animal Control or the sheriff’s department.
*Never pick up an animal and drop at a shelter unattended after business hours, please remember the moment you pick up that animal you are taking responsibility for its welfare.
*The shelter will want to know where the animal was found, when the animal was found and in what condition or if the animal has been fed, bathed or given any vet care.
*Always remember someone may be looking for their lost pet, it is never a good idea to think you can keep someone else’s animal.
*In the state of Kentucky stray adult dogs are held for 5 days, if the animal is not claimed and you are interested in adoption that certainly can be arranged after the 5-day stray hold.
Thank you for helping a stray or homeless animal in need!
